MJ Powers is one of Joyn’s newest underwriters and a self-described high energy go-getter with a passion to help customers and clients find insurance that appropriately fits their needs. At Joyn, MJ will use her investigative nature and dedication to the craft of underwriting to help Joyn’s trading partners find solutions for their risks all while helping Joyn grow a profitable book of business.
Over the last ten years, MJ has gained a wealth of insights and experience in underwriting commercial insurance. Most recently, she was a regional underwriter at Capital Insurance Group focused on the Southwestern United States. MJ earned her Bachelor’s degree in Communications and Journalism from Cazenovia College and holds an industry designation as Associate in General Insurance (AINS).
What excites you about Joyn?
From my first interview, I could tell that Joyn was an inclusive and optimistic environment that was designed to allow their team members to thrive. I could also tell that taking a position at Joyn will give me opportunities for continued growth and development—both professional and personal. What also excites me about Joyn is that their senior executives demonstrate an inclusivity and passion for employees and their customers, and as an underwriter who has worked on both the agency and carrier sides, I’m very excited about the streamlined technology they’ve developed that creates an ease of use for underwriting reviews.
What does your normal work day look like?
I spend most of my days reviewing risk exposures that align to Joyn’s appetite and communicating quickly and effectively with agency partners to provide solutions and support. I also spend part of each day collaborating with my team to create a cohesive and innovative environment.
And what do you enjoy outside of work?
When I’m not working, I enjoy kayaking, hiking, comedy clubs, movies, and music. Something a lot of people might not know about me is that I also love to write satirical blogs.
