As an Operations Specialist, Jimmy plays a crucial role in delivering Joyn’s one-of-a-kind experience to customers and brokers by ensuring that underwriters have what they need while helping to build process efficiencies and monitoring capabilities.

With more than a year under his belt at Joyn, Jimmy sees one of our differentiators as having a culture of always driving to make improvements. We are always seeking more ways to make customers’ lives easier, our jobs better, and the company more efficient. And everyone is always more than willing to make those improvements.

James Perry is an Operations Specialist at Joyn who plays a crucial role in delivering Joyn’s one-of-a-kind experience to customers and brokers by ensuring that underwriters have what they need while helping to build process efficiencies and monitoring capabilities. James’ career in insurance began at AIG where was a Professional Associate with the Casualty team.

James earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in history, summa cum laude, at S.U.N.Y. Albany. In addition to his insurance industry work, he is also certified by the International TEFL Academy to teach English as a foreign language globally. He also worked as a Quality Assurance Specialist for a public housing authority where he was responsible for reviewing lead-based testing reports for a major metropolitan city.

This isn’t your first role in the insurance industry, so please tell us what attracted you to Joyn and how it stacks up given your other experiences.

In a lot of ways, I’ve always sought places to work with a strong team and coworkers who are professional but also just fun to be around. And Joyn is definitely that kind of atmosphere. By far the best part of Joyn is the people that I work with. Everyone is professional but they are also kind, intelligent, and helpful. And everyone really adopts a “team first” mentality where we all recognize we are part of a team that is working toward a big goal and everyone is important to achieving it.

The other thing that I really have liked as a differentiator is that we are always driving to make improvements. I’ve never worked for a company that is so driven to constantly increase efficiency. We are always seeking more ways to make customers’ lives easier, our jobs better, and the company more efficient. And everyone is always more than willing to make those improvements.

What does a normal day look like for you?

The first thing I usually do is service the urgent requests that came in after hours, like processing new binds, responding to brokers with billing questions, and answering any other urgent team questions. My main focus throughout the day is then processing any new bind orders that come in. I review them for accuracy, ensure we have the proper paperwork, and turn our bound quotes into brand new policies. Then throughout the day I work to help insureds, brokers, or prospective clients get answers to any questions they might have.

In a previous role, I worked as a Quality Assurance Specialist for a public housing authority in a major metropolitan city, where I reviewed lead-based testing reports to see if they needed to be flagged for remediation. This required a strict eye for detail because missing any lead in the report could put children in a dangerous situation. And that eye for detail helps me in my day-to-day work because we have to catch any errors in our binding and issuance processes before policies are finalized.

When you’re not working, where can we find you?

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my friends, family, and dogs. I like making the people around me laugh. I also love biking and hiking and am obsessed with Star Wars.
