Spotlight Series: Meet Dorian West

"Dorian is a great addition to the Joyn team. She is a knowledgeable underwriter who understands and responds to the needs of her customers, agents and market" says teammate Gabriel Fox. "I always appreciate an underwriter who looks to say yes while keeping within Joyn’s appetite and business model. Dorian balances both effectively and enthusiastically.”

After spending most of my career in a traditional insurance setting, my first foray into the insurtech world was truly invigorating. I knew right away I wanted to continue working with insurtech companies. When I learned about Joyn, it seemed like the perfect company for me given my background and interest in the innovation that insurtech companies are doing right now.

One of Joyn’s newest team members is Dorian West, a dedicated underwriter who is using her expertise in the Texas insurance market to grow a profitable book of business for Joyn while expanding broker and agent relationships.

As a service-minded insurance professional, Dorian has spent much of the last ten years underwriting property, inland marine, general liability, flood, crime, umbrella, and auto risks. She joins the team from Porch Group where she was a Manager of Customer Service & Retention for their Elite Insurance Group division. Dorian’s dedication to the industry is evidenced in her role as Chairperson of the Insurance Management Advisory Board at Collin College.

Dorian holds a Master of Arts in Business Management from Dallas Baptist University and earned her Bachelor of Arts in Journalism at Baylor University. She is a licensed agent in Texas and is a Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt. Dorian is also an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.

What’s your role at Joyn?

Since starting at Joyn in December, I have really hit the ground running and am bringing the expertise I’ve developed over more than ten years in the industry to help Joyn grow a profitable book of business, namely within the Texas market. The majority of my time in the insurance realm has been spent within the E&S Commercial Underwriting space, equipping me with the tools I need to make a difference at Joyn starting on day one. My previous position with Porch/Elite Insurance Group was my introduction to the start-up, insurtech realm. There, I had the pleasure of building and developing the Customer Service and Retention division from the ground up. As someone who has had the chance to create processes and guidelines and underwrite within the commercial E&S space, I am excited to bring that expertise to Joyn as the company continues to grow and develop.

What attracted you to Joyn?

After spending most of my career in a traditional insurance setting, my first foray into the insurtech world was truly invigorating. I knew right away I wanted to continue working with insurtech companies. When I learned about Joyn, it seemed like the perfect company for me given my background and interest in the innovation that insurtech companies are doing right now.

It’s also extremely admirable to see a group of individuals invested and passionate enough to create a new and innovative company within the insurtech space. It’s not every day that you have an opportunity to be a part of a company that is truly transforming an industry and making it work better for everyone involved, especially one with such a long and established history like insurance. I saw this passion in each person I met during the interview process, and my admiration for Joyn grew. Every employee here is focused on making positive strides within the insurance industry by forming a forward-thinking organization. I look forward to being part of Joyn’s success story.

How is Joyn different from other insurance companies you’ve worked for?

Joyn is different due to how flat the organization is. I am constantly in meetings with C-Suite level executives who have open door policies for all employees. Most importantly, I feel heard and seen as a vital part of this company.

Tell us about your passions and hobbies outside of Joyn.

I am very family oriented, so I love spending time with my family which includes my awesome husband and our two sons. I also love reading and volunteering at local homeless shelters.
