Spotlight Series: Meet Scott Hand

As a new member of Joyn's underwriting team, Scott has already been able to provide insightful input into the continued enhancements to our platform. He feels that having a voice in the process after only being with the company for a short time is refreshing.

Having experience working for an agency, MGA, Insurtech and Reinsurance company has allowed me to learn what role each kind of business plays in the broader insurance industry. And I can see how each plays a part in the insurance process and what partners look for to help the industry grow successfully.

Spotlight Series: Meet Scott Hand

Scott Hand, one of Joyn’s newest underwriters, brings ten years of commercial underwriting experience to the team. Prior to coming to Joyn, Scott was a Program Underwriter at Rocklake Insurance Group, and also gained experience at QEO Group, Plastridge Insurance Agency, and MacNeill Group.

Scott earned his Bachelor of Arts in Multimedia Journalism from Florida Atlantic University. He maintains two insurance industry designations: Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) and Associates in General Insurance (AINS). He also enjoys volunteering for and supporting the Palm Beach Athletic League (PAL).

You’ve been in the industry for a decade—how does your background prepare you for this new role?

Having experience working for an agency, MGA, Insurtech and Reinsurance company has allowed me to learn what role each kind of business plays in the broader insurance industry. And I can see how each plays a part in the insurance process and what partners look for to help the industry grow successfully. All of that experience creates a good foundation especially for a company like Joyn, which has a lot of potential for growth in a space and an industry that has thus far been slow to change.

I’ve also focused a lot on professional development through obtaining designations and seeking knowledge from a base level perspective. Even today, I’m in a mentorship program that will allow me to learn from a mentor in the industry with a much different background than mine to become more well-rounded in other areas that I might not deal with day-to-day.

Can you tell us how Joyn is different given your brief time with the company so far?

There is just an incredible level of transparency at Joyn, internally and with our brokers and insureds, that is much different from other stops in my career. Everything is open for all team members to see and have open discussions about, which is part of Joyn’s effort to constantly be growing and improving. It’s refreshing to be able to have a voice in the processes that are being built.

What do you enjoy outside of work?

When I’m not working, I enjoy Miami sports, music, reading, playing golf, working out, traveling, and spending time outdoors. I also spend a lot of time seeking self-improvement to be a better person every day.
