Being Efficient Helps Brokers Close More Business

Celebrating his one year anniversary with Joyn, Dan Roman writes about what delights him about his work and how his role drives company-wide efficiency by saving underwriters time.

As one of our first team members, coming to Joyn in April 2021, Underwriting Insurance Product Lead Dan Roman just celebrated his one year anniversary with Joyn. For this Spotlight Blog, we checked in with Dan on what delights him about his work with Joyn and how his role drives company-wide efficiency by saving underwriters time.

Now that you’ve been with Joyn for a full year, give us an update—how are things going, how is Joyn different from other places you’ve worked, and what delights you about your work?

There are definitely a lot of ways that Joyn is different, but I think one of the biggest things absolutely has to be the culture. I had worked with a lot of the Joyn team previously so I knew that it was a special group and that the leadership means what they say about culture. It has really gone above and beyond, though. Every day I feel like I’m part of a team in every sense of the word, working with people that care about me professionally and personally.

The other thing that really delights me is that everyone here is really focused on excellence in everything that we do. We are all a team of people that are striving to do our absolute best and get these products and services exactly the way they need to get.

One of the big things that Joyn CEO Seraina Macia describes as the company’s “North Star” is the concept of 10x thinking—Joyn’s goal to do things 10 times faster, better, and more efficient than legacy carriers. How do you apply this to your work?

For me, 10x thinking is all about making sure that everything is done correctly the first time. If it isn’t, you just end up wasting time and going back and forth between systems.

We’ve all worked in environments before where you look up an account in one system, then you go to another system to work on it, then you go to another system to get some updates, and then you have to email someone separately. That wastes so much time and it doesn’t just cost the company money, it costs brokers time and business, too. Our system is all inclusive so we are using our time wisely and can then be more efficient with the brokers who partner with us, which in turn allows them to chase and close more business. It’s a win-win-win.

If we are going to deliver on our value proposition, which is to create a better experience for brokers that solves the pain points that have frustrated them practically forever, we have to do things right the first time.

And how does 10x apply to your role specifically?

My role here has a lot to do with testing and quality control. It’s looking at the rates, making sure that we get the premiums you would expect to get based on all of the inputs that we put into the system. That helps Joyn as a company do things 10x better by allowing underwriters to just instinctively trust that what’s coming out of the system is correct. When the underwriters know that they can trust our technology and not have any doubts that the system is working the way that it’s supposed to, it saves them a lot of time.
